Trichy is the hottest city, I’ve ever been to. I might, call it as a Temple Town of South India for the close knit temples in and around the city. And, Rock Fort temple is one of the most famous among the itineraries of Trichy.
We started directly from office to Koyambedu to board the bus. In 5-6 hours of traveling, we reached Trichy bus stand. From there, we took an auto to reach Wuraiyur where we stayed at our friend’s home. The houses & buildings in Trichy looks like closely packed row houses. Cauvery River is the main water source for the people.
We planned to visit Rock Fort temple as it is nearby Wuraiyur. It’s half an hour journey by Bus. There’s a legendary story behind the temple, built over on the Rock Fort dedicated to Lord Ganesh. It is the place where Lord Ganesha ran from King Vibishana, after creating the Ranganathaswamy deity in Srirangam.
Rock architecture is at its best, acclaims to Pallavas as they carved rock caves to access through steep steps to reach the pinnacle. The steps are so steep and those who have breathing trouble needs extra care before they start. It will be a blessing for all those who climb up the hill, as they will get to burn all extra calories! All the way to the top, you will see scriptures of the legendary story carved on the wall. There are few shops available at every pass selling from photos and idols of deities to water bottles. Huge elephant welcomes you at the foothill of the temple, Guardian of the Rock Fort!
When you reach the top, you will feel the cool breeze which would surmount your exhaustive trekking to the cliff. One can see the beautiful panoramic view of the city, Sri Rangam temple, Cauvery river from the top. And it’s quite disheartening to see rivers Cauvery, Kollidam flowing through the city is dried out.
Visit to Rock Fort temple is like trekking to the hill terrain to take the blessing of Lord Ganesh!
Other temples in and around Trichy are Tiruvanaikavval temple, Samayapuram Maariamman temple, Vekkaliamman temple, Sri Rangam temple, Vayalur Murugan temple.
St. Lourde’s Church:
St. Lourde’s Church, devoted to Our Lady of Lourdes is located nearby Rock Fort Temple. Architecture of the church originates to Gallo-Catholic design. And the main tower is clearly visible from the top of Rock fort temple.
Here’s our second day trip to srirangam temple.
